Gateshead District are setting up a new team to run Gateshead Explorers. Hopefully a representative will be coming along from your group. Lets hope that this will bring about better communication and more activities for the Explorer section.

Confido 2008 Explorer Info

You may or may not be aware that the on-line booking system has gone live on the County's Web Site for this year's Confido.

This year and after listening to the Explorers from around the County, I have decided to give the Explorers their "own space". We will be having "The Explorer Lounge". An area only for Explorers. There will be activities to do during the weekend, within the lounge, but the main purpose of it is to give the Explorers their own place to go. Of course, I hope they will join in with all the other events happening over the weekend but they are now going to have the opportunity to mix with other Explorers a bit more easily.

After a very productive meeting at District Camp we are going to set up a My Space forum for Gateshead Explorers. This will run alongside this weblog and help to keep people up to date with what is going on. So watch this space !

Things are just about organised for District Camp.
For activities, Explorers will be doing different things to Scouts. At present we have some climbing organised on the Saturday and a challenge hike for the Sunday. Dont worry, the challenge is not distance but some activities at each check point !

Kielder Camp

Dont forget that Kielder camp is 11th - 13th April. We are going to be doing some Explorer activities and planning for the up and coming District Camp from 23rd - 27th May. If you want to have a say come along !

What is happening ?

On 11th April we will be having a Scout Activity weekend at Kielder. This is the first and most important date in your Explorer diary. Book it in and be there. We are hoping for all Explorers in Gateshead to attend and get the Explorer unit moving.

Book yourself in with your Scout Leader.

Until then, if you want to take part in the Scout Chess, Quiz or 5 A Side competitions just enter as an Explorer.

12th - Night Hike - Meet at Ebchester boat house at 7pm - stop over at the Boat House until Saturday afternoon.
21st - High level hike in the Lake District - Meet at Dunston Church Hall 8am - Return late afternoon - Bring warm, waterproof clothing, food and hot drinks. ( Please post / phone / text if you are going so we can organise transport )

Meet at Swalwell visitors centre 1pm on Saturday 24th. The plan is to cycle up to Ebchester ( gear will be taken up by car ) then bivvy in the usual place.

Bring the usual stuff for bivvying and food.

Return lunchtime on Sunday.

Bowling

Thursday 29th 7.30pm at MetroCentre - Pool then food then bowling ?

Stay awake help

If anyone is interested in helping with a Stay awake be at 5th Tyne Church Hall for 6.30pm on Friday 9th March. This will finish on Saturday around 9am.

Bothy Weekend / Outward Bound Opportunity / Pic update

Bothy Weekend

Meet at Whickham, Methodist Church Hall at 12 noon on Saturday 24th.

Bring usual stuff for bothying and either bivvy bags or tents just incase bothy is full. Return some time Sunday afternoon.

Outward Bound Opportunity

There are free places available for an Outward Bound Course at Ullswater 21st July - 11th August. You need to let us know if you are interested and we need to apply before 30th March. Then there will be a selection day. Let us know if you are interested.

Christmas Camp / Activities

Christmas Camp

Well done to all those hardy individuals who succeeded in enjoying the Christmas Camp. Sadly the planned casual walk from Grisedale Tarn was interrupted by a well executed break of camp at 5.30 am with what felt like 60 mph winds and temperatures of minus 15 degrees.

Im sure we all now agree that it was character building !

December Meeting / Bored ?

As we are meeting this Saturday in the Lakes, there will not be a meeting next Tuesday 12th. All matters that were to be talked about at the meeting will be discussed over liquid refreshment this weekend.
Dont forget the hikes over Christmas. An ideal opportunity to get your lardy butt out and walk of some of that Christmas excess !

Whislt off work, the Internet's free games sites have had some use. One I thought was quite appropriate.

However, I completely abhor such violence and would recommend that you DONT try this at home.

November Explorer Meeting

We’ve got a rep from Gateshead Youth Council coming to the Explorer meeting on 14 Nov as they are doing some research at the moment into the various uniformed organisations in the Borough.

It would be great if we could have as many exploreres there as possible. ( 7.30pm incase you forgot ! )

Yes , Simon, you need to go aswell. ( Alan and I promise well turn up too ! )

It would also be great if we can come up with some suggestions as to what we want to do over the next few months.

County Canoe Race / Great North Run

County Canoe Race is next weekend (30th) So far, Jack, Johnny, Simon and Harvey are interested. Please let me know ASAP if anyone else wants to go.

Great North Run is also next weekend(1st Oct ) We need help to give out water and take the rest back to the Boathouse for the next years supplies ! Meet at Dunston Church hall 8am on Sunday.
